Tk 51 lakh grant for women's organisations

DHAKA, July 13 (BSS) - The government today distributed Taka 51.20 lakh as special grants to 128 women's voluntary organisations working at the grassroots for gender promotion through group formation for income generation.

State minister for Women and Children Affairs Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury distributed the amount in cheques among the voluntary groups to run their income-generation campaigns.

"The women at the grassroots could play a vital role to build the national economy through income generation programmes," she told the function, joined as the special guest by Jatiya Mahila Sangstha chairman Professor Momtaz Begum.

Sharmin said her ministry provided the amount to recognize good performances shown by these 128 district level women groups for the promotion of the underprivileged women.

Sharmin said that the government would arrange capacity building training for the workers of the women groups or volunteer women organizations.

Bangladesh Mahila Kallyan Parishad selected 128 organizations from 64 districts on the basis of their contributions to the women development while these organizations were registered with Women Affairs Department.

Each of the organizations received Taka 4000 for implementing their income-generating activities.

Director General of Women Affairs Department M. Ashraf Hossain chaired the programme addressed among others by Women Affairs Department Kamal Uddin.
