Authority for deep-sea port soon

DHAKA, July 12 (BSS) - The government plans to constitute soon a deep-sea port authority, which will expedite the process for construction of the planned sea port.

This was informed at a review meeting on construction of Deep-Sea port held in the Shipping Ministry at the secretariat in the city.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan presided over the meeting.

The meeting informed that the government has completed some preliminary works of the sea port such as setting up of a cell and making necessary laws regarding the port.

Shipping Secretary Abdul Mannan Hawlader, joint secretary Abdul Kuddus, member of Board of Investment (BOI) Ahmed Nasiruddin Mahmud, joint secretary (ERD) Bijon Kumar Boishoya, member (Chittagong Port Authority) Captain Anwarul Haque Chowdhury and representatives from Planning Commissionm and seep sea-port cell.

The first phase work for construction of the deep-sea port in
Sonadia Island of Cox's Bazar district is likely to be completed
by 2015 with an estimated cost of Taka 15,000 crore, officials
said.

"Bangladesh will earn over Taka 1,000 crore in 2016 as
revenue from the port and it will be doubled in 2020. Exploration
of foreign fund and preparation of detailed design for
construction of the seaport are underway.

The deep-sea port project will include construction of
infrastructures for the port and jetty, beck water, additional
channels, export-import zones, system for communications with
other ports, road, railway, power supply, gas connection, transit
area, township and helipad.

The port would be a regional port. It will expand
Bangladesh's trade with China, Myanmar, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri
Lanka and Thailand.
