National Museum enters into digital era

DHAKA, July 13 (BSS)- National Museum has entered into digitalization process with information of 10,000 artifacts, relics, antiques, replicas and famous pictures of different museums were put in the database, chief of the national organization said today.

Museum Director General Prokash Chandra Das said the authorities have stored information of only 10 percent of historic evidence, while it has been eying to post data of all the 100,000 such samples on the website by 2012.

The government has allocated an amount of nearly Taka 2.75 crore for the year 2010-12 to expedite the national museum's endeavours to go digital in line with the government's vision for Digital Bangladesh by 2021, 50 years of the country's independence.

"Once we complete the project by next year, any person can visit the website and gather information on Bangladesh's rich heritage and cultural background from any corner of the world," the director general said.

Project Director Dr Shikha Noor Munshi said they have awarded the development work to Centre for Environment and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) and expressed the hope that the work might be completed ahead of schedule.

Established on 20 March 1913, Dhaka Museum was accorded the status of the National Museum of Bangladesh on November 17, 1983 with its base in city's Shahbagh.

The museum is one of best tourist sites for thousands of recreation hungry people of the overcrowded capital Dhaka, home to an estimated 15 million people.
