USA assures Dhaka of continued support to combat climate change

DHAKA, July 14 (BSS)-The USA today assured Bangladesh of continued support to environment protection, conservation of forests and low carbon development to combat adverse impacts of climate change.

Acting US Ambassador to Bangladesh Jon Danilowicz gave the assurance at a meeting with State Minister for Environment and Forests Dr Hasan Mahmud at his office here today, official sources said.

They discussed various issues relating to Bangladesh-US relations, cooperation in the areas of environment protection and global climate change negotiation as well as forthcoming visit of the state minister to the USA.

The envoy said Bangladesh is among 12 developing countries, the USA has given priority to support implementing low emission development projects to help the countries in their carbon offsetting initiatives.

Dr Hasan will visit USA in the first week of the next month at the invitation of the Cornell University as part of an initiative to build collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forests in the areas of climate change, implement environmental projects and biotechnology.

During the meeting, the US envoy hailed the commitment of Bangladesh government and its efforts in combating terrorism at local and global level and hoped that the understanding between Bangladesh and USA in this field would be strengthened in the coming days.
