Charge hearing against Sayeedi adjourned till Sept 25

DHAKA, Sept 21 (BSS)-The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today rejected a petition for Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi seeking recall of its (Tribunal) earlier order on taking cognizance of Sayeedi's alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during 1971.

Chairman of the three-member tribunal Justice Nizamul Haque pronounced the order of rejection after hearing both accused and prosecution counsels.

The Tribunal on July 14 took the charges against Jamaat-e- Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi into cognizance.

After pronouncing the rejection order, Sayeedi's counsel Tajul Islam initiated to reply the prosecution submission to frame charges against his client, which was incomplete till ending of the court hour.

The tribunal set September 25 as the next date for hearing on the issue.

The Prosecution of the tribunal earlier completed its submission to frame charges by presenting specific allegations against Sayeedi, which was started on August 23.

Earlier, Sayeedi was produced before the tribunal from the jail as he was detained there in connection with allegations including involvement in crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation.

Prosecution counsel Syed Hyder Ali submitted that several definite allegations of Sayeedi's involvement in crimes against humanity in 1971 were detected during the investigation.

He claimed that at least 31 specific allegations against Sayeedi of committing crimes against humanity including mass killings, rape, arson and looting in several villages under Pirojpur district during War of Liberation had been detected.

"Sayeedi worked as abettor of Pakistani occupation army from May 3, 1971 to December 16,1971 in Pirojpur," the prosecution counsel said.

He submitted that at least 18 witnesses gave their depositions to the investigation agency regarding Sayeedi's role in forming Razaker Bhahini in Pirojpur district.

Besides, the prosecution counsel submitted some newspaper clippings and video recording footage, collected by different TV channels, which he claimed as evidence to substantiate the allegations against Sayeedi.

Sayeedi's counsel advocate Tajul Islam denied the allegations brought against his client, saying he has been made accused on suspicion.

The government on March 25 last year set up the tribunal with Justice M Nizamul Haque as chairman and Justice ATM Fazle Kabir and retired district and sessions judge AKM Zahir Ahmed as its members.
